Senior Daniel Wesley Wins Churchill Scholarship for Study at Cambridge

Princeton, N.J. -- Daniel Wesley of Bryn Mawr, Pa. has been awarded a Churchill Scholarship for graduate work at Churchill College, Cambridge University. He was one of 11 students who received the honor this year.

The Churchill scholarships, provided by the Winston Churchill Foundation of the United States, is given annually to outstanding American students for graduate study in engineering, mathematics, or the physical and natural sciences. The award covers all tuition and fees and provides a living allowance

Wesley, a physics major, plans to toward a Certificate of Advanced Study in Mathematics next year. After his year in England, he plans to return to the United States to pursue a Ph.D. in physics.

"Physics spans a lot of things. During my work towards a physics degree I've had to become familiar with both abstract mathematics and the milling machine in the Jadwin metal shop," Wesley said. On a deeper level, physics combines a certain philosophical flavor -- in the sense that you ask very deep questions about Nature -- with concrete, practical considerations. So you can be sure that a good theory is not only an interesting idea but really represents the way the world is."

During his time at Princeton, Wesley has won two prizes in physics: the Pyka Prize, for exceptional progress in the freshmen year, and the Kusaka Prize for "outstanding physics undergraduates." For two years he was an editor of the student newspaper, The Daily Princetonian, and as a senior he was vice president of the Undergraduate Math/Physics Colloquium.
