New Jersey Governor Whitman to Speak

WHO: New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman

WHAT: Lecture on "Sewers: The Last Frontier of Smart Growth." The lecture is free and open to the public.

WHEN: Thursday, April 27 at 5:00 p.m.

WHERE: Dodds Auditorium, Robertson Hall, Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs on the Princeton University campus

Governor Whitman was elected as New Jersey's first woman governor in 1993 and was re-elected in 1997. The governor's initiatives have included welfare reform, the deregulation of energy public utilities, energy tax reform, and reform of the juvenile justice system.

In her second term in office, Whitman has focused much of her attention on sustainable development issues in New Jersey, noting, "We've committed to preserving 40 percent of the state as open space, promoting environmentally responsible industry, and encouraging successful urban redevelopment plans." Her Open Space initiative provides more than a billion dollars in stable funding to preserve an additional one million acres of land over the next decade for agriculture, recreation, greenways and watershed protection.

Whitman's talk is sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson School, and is the final lecture in the student-initiated state and local government series.
