Princeton offers admission to 12.2 percent of applicants
Princeton University has granted admission to 12.2 percent of undergraduate applicants for the Class of 2004, or 1,670 students. In total, 13,654 students had applied.
The admission rate is slightly higher than last year, when 11.3 percent of applicants were accepted from among a record 14,875 applicants.
For the first time, half of those offered admission this year are women. Thirty-five percent of those accepted indicated minority backgrounds, compared to 33 percent last year. Nine percent are international students who do not hold U.S. citizenship, up from 6 percent last year.
The task of making decisions was as difficult as ever, said Dean of Admission Fred Hargadon. Of this year's applicants, 52% had SAT's of 1400 or higher. Fifty-two percent also had grade-point averages of 3.8 or higher, including more than 4,000 applicants with 4.0 GPAs. The great majority of applicants were highly accomplished in extra-curricular activities, Hargadon said.
"We have had to make unimaginably difficult decisions," Hargadon said. "As has been true for many years, our applicant group this year included several thousand terrific young men and women to whom we could not offer admission but whom we'd have been happy to admit were our freshman class larger than it is."
The enrollment target for the freshman class was set at 1,166.
Depending on the number of accepted students who choose to enroll, additional offers may be made between now and September to applicants on the waiting list.
