Alison Des Forges, winner of a 1999 MacArthur Fellowship, directs research on Rwanda and Burundi for Human Rights Watch. She serves as an expert witness to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and has provided evidence to judicial authorities in several countries. She has also assisted U.N. officials and others investigating the Rwandan genocide.

As co-chair of the 1993 International Commission of Investigation into Human Rights Abuse in Rwanda, Des Forges reported on government-organized massacres of Tutsi before the 1994 genocide. She also chaired the 1994 International Commission that investigated massive slaughter in Burundi following the assassination of President Mechior Ndadaye.
