New Jersey Planning Commission Director to speak on "Smart Growth, New Jersey Style"

Princeton, NJ -- Herbert Simmens, executive director of the New Jersey State Planning Commission, will speak on "Smart Growth, New Jersey Style" at Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs on Tuesday, February 22, at 4:30 p.m., Bowl 2.

Simmens earned an M.P.A. degree from the Woodrow Wilson School in 1971, with a specialization in urban and regional planning, and has been a New Jersey licensed professional planner since the mid-1970s. He leads the New Jersey State Planning Commission, which consists of 17 members who represent state and local governments and the public. The commission's State Development and Redevelopment Plan is an attempt to organize future growth through programs that help develop and sustain attractive communities that can be supported at a reasonable cost. The plan suggests that New Jersey can meet this goal through coordinated intergovernmental investment, which in turn should encourage private interests to invest their support.

This past December, the American Planning Association released a new report, Planning Communities for the 21st Century that singled out six states, including New Jersey, for their smart growth planning leadership.

The lecture is sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson School.
