Works by Contemporary African-American Artists on view at Princeton University Art Museum

Exhibition Dates: February 1 through March 5, 2000

PRINCETON -- "Selections: Contemporary Art by African-American Artists," an exhibition of works in all media drawn primarily from the permanent collection, will be on view through March 5, 2000 at The Art Museum, Princeton University, in recognition of Black History Month.

The paintings, prints, photographs, and sculpture on view reflect a cross-section of concerns by such contemporary black artists as Jean-Michel Basquait, Mark Bradford, Robert Colescott, Sam Gilliam, Lyle Ashton Harris, Margo Humphrey, Jacob Lawrence, Stephen Marc, Howardena Pindell, Adrian Piper, Lorna Simpson, Kara Elizabeth Walker, Carrie Mae Weems, and Daniel Williams. Two of the photographers represented are graduates of Princeton: Accra Shepp, Class of 1984, and Carla Williams, Class of 1986.

Museum events celebrating Black History Month have been organized by student representatives from the Third World Center, members of the Docent Association, and Museum staff. Activities open to the public will include docent-led tours and gallery talks for children and adults. A special evening of music, art, and refreshments for the university community also is planned, which has been supported by the Friends of The Art Museum.

The exhibition gallery will include a reading area with publications on the work of several of the artists.

The Art Museum is open to the public without charge. Free highlights tours of the collection are given every Saturday at 2 p.m. The Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. It is closed on Monday and major holidays. The Museum Shop closes at 5 p.m.

The Museum is located in the middle of the Princeton University campus. Picasso’s large sculpture Head of a Woman stands in front. For further information, please call (609) 258-3788.
