Columbia Professor and Author Anthony Marx to Discuss "South African Nationalism Before and After Mandela"
Princeton, NJ -- Anthony Marx, an associate professor of political science at Columbia University, will speak on "South African Nationalism Before and After Mandela" at Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs on Tuesday, February 8, at 4:30 p.m. in Robertson Hall, Bowl 2.
Marx, who earned a master's degree in public affairs from the Woodrow Wilson School in 1986 and a Ph.D. from Princeton's Department of Politics in 1990, is the author of Making Race and Nation: A Comparison of the United States, South Africa, and Brazil, and Lessons of Struggle: South African Internal Opposition, 1960-1990, as well as of numerous articles in scholarly journals.
His research focuses on the comparative interaction of identity formation (race, ethnicity, class, nationalism), participation, and nation-state consolidation. For this work, Marx has received a John Simon Guggenheim fellowship, Howard Foundation grant, and was a fellow for 1997-98 at the National Humanities Center. In 1999, he was co-recipient of the American Political Science Association's Ralph Bunche Award, given annually to the best scholarly work in political science that explores the phenomenon of ethnic and cultural pluralism.
