Former Governor James Florio to speak on "A New Public Policy Framework"
Princeton, NJ -- Former New Jersey Governor James Florio will speak on "A New Public Policy Framework for a Changing World Economy" at Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs on Wednesday, February 9, at 4:30 p.m. in Robertson Hall, Dodds Auditorium.
Florio, who now practices law in Piscataway, NJ, as a partner with Fischbein, Badillo, Wagner, and Harding, is a candidate for the U.S. Senate. As governor of New Jersey from 1990 to 1994, he signed into law the Clean Water Enforcement Act of 1990. He also signed the Quality Education Act, aimed at providing greater equity in New Jersey's school finance system. His welfare reform package and health care cost reduction program serve as models for national legislation, and he is perhaps best known for enacting the assault weapons ban. In 1993, he received the Kennedy Library Foundation's Profile in Courage award for commitment to causes serving the public interest.
Florio entered public service in 1969, serving three terms in the New Jersey General Assembly. He was elected to Congress in 1974 and, until 1990, represented the 1st District of New Jersey in the United States House of Representatives. During his tenure in Congress, he authored the "Superfund" law, the nation's primary program for cleaning up hazardous waste sites.
In addition to practicing law, Florio is currently a professor in the Department of Public Policy and Administration at Rutgers University. He also serves on several national public policy boards, including the Federal Home Loan Bank, the Trade and Environment Policy Advisory Committee to the U.S. Trade Representative, and the U.S. Secretary of Energy's Advisory Board.
