Pieces in place for final phase of four-year college system

With the opening of the new Butler College facilities this fall, the final pieces in the reshaping of Princeton’s residential college program are now in place.
    The University launched its four-year residential college program in 2007 when Whitman College debuted as the sixth residential college. For the previous 25 years, the five residential colleges housed only freshmen and sophomores. The new system was designed to enable undergraduates from all four classes and graduate students to reside in the colleges to more closely share their Princeton experiences.   Read more …

Center for African American Studies poised to lead: Setting the path for the study of race

Princeton’s Center for African American Studies is launching an aggressive effort to become the leading resource for the public’s understanding of race in America, coming at a time when the center’s scholars say they are seeing an upward trend in racial issues igniting the country in a series of “brush fires.”
    Working with new chair Eddie Glaude, scholars will build on growth and strategies developed in the center’s first three years to take advantage of fresh avenues to broaden discussions of race with the public, to engage in research that could be of use to policymakers, and to harness a unique interdisciplinary approach to reach the next generation of leaders.   Read more …

Q&A with Marta Tienda on Latino studies and the immigration debate

Princeton recently established a Program in Latino Studies, and it is led by Marta Tienda, the Maurice P. During Professor in Demographic Studies and a professor of sociology and public affairs. She examines racial and ethnic differences in various facets of social inequality, such as income, education and employment.
    Tienda recently discussed her role as the first director of the Latino studies program, as well as her relationship with students and her research in immigration and migration.   Read more …

First Bridge Year students prepare for service abroad

The 20 students selected for Princeton’s inaugural Bridge Year Program have departed for their extended period of international service, propelled by the inspirational words of University President Shirley M. Tilghman.
    During an on-campus orientation, the students met with Tilghman, who explained the origins of the program, which enables students to defer the start of their freshman year to spend a tuition-free enrichment period abroad.   Read more …

New home for Fields Center, Community House a beacon for multicultural education, social opportunities

When establishing their new home at 58 Prospect Ave., Princeton University’s Fields Center and Community House staff decided to make it a beacon for multicultural education and social opportunities within the University campus and local community.
    While physically located just across the street from their old building at 86 Olden St., the new facility is miles away in offering larger, more visible and dynamic space for the work supported by the two organizations. The new building was designed to help make the programs more accessible.   Read more …

Students honored at Opening Exercises
Student award winners      

The accomplishments of Princeton's students were celebrated with the awarding of four undergraduate prizes at Opening Exercises Sept. 13. Honored for their academic achievements (pictured with Dean of the College Nancy Malkiel) were Mohit Agrawal, Yu (Evans) Xiang, George Boxer, Danielle Rochlin, Tengyao Wang and David Karp.
     “Among the qualities that matter to us at Princeton, none are more important than intellectual engagement and academic achievement,” Malkiel said. “It is especially fitting, therefore, that we begin the academic year by honoring a select group of undergraduates for extraordinary accomplishment in their programs of study.”

Volunteer opportunities for Princeton parents
The 2009-10 Parents Fund campaign is underway, and it welcomes your support. The Parents Fund raises critical unrestricted funds that help sustain the quality of the educational experience at Princeton.
    Led by Terri and Jim Baird P06 P10, the Parents Committee is a dedicated group of parents of current students and graduates. Committee members connect with other Princeton parents and encourage their support of the University. In addition, committee members have the opportunity to participate in events on campus and throughout the country as well as to meet faculty, administrators and other Princeton parents.

Your comments: Eating clubs task force
A task force composed of students, faculty, staff and alumni has been asked to spend this academic year reviewing the relationships between the University and the eating clubs and to examine whether there are steps that can and should be taken to strengthen those relationships and improve the club experience for the benefit of the clubs, the University and Princeton students.
    The task force is eager to hear from any parents who have thoughts they would like to share. A website has been created to provide information about the task force, including its charge and its membership, and to solicit comments and suggestions, or parents can write to the chair of the task force, Robert K. Durkee ’69, vice president and secretary, at durkee@princeton.edu.
