Rutgers Dean to Become Director of New Frist Campus Center

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Paul Breitman, associate dean for student centers and student activities at Rutgers College, will become director of Princeton University's new Frist Campus Center, effective January 5.

The Frist Campus Center, which is currently under construction, will open in fall 2000 and will provide the campus, for the first time, with centralized services and new dining, social, and performance spaces and programs. Breitman will direct programming and oversee the functioning of the facility, coordinate food services, maintenance, and program requirements, and work with graduate and undergraduate student government and with faculty and staff to design extracurricular programming compatible with the academic and educational mission of the University.

"The challenge of the first director of our new campus center will be to establish the physical and programmatic presence of the center in the life of the University," said Dean of Student Life Janina Montero. "Paul Breitman's 30 years of experience in higher education, his demonstrated organizational skill, and his evident ability to inspire broad collaboration among students, faculty, and administrative colleagues give us great confidence he will succeed."

At Rutgers, Breitman has been responsible for the operations and financial management of three student center facilities -- The Rutgers Student Center, The Busch Campus Center and The Student Activities Center -- as well as for the development, implementation, and evaluation of their services and programs. He also has managed a university-wide student activities program emphasizing student involvement and leadership development.

Breitman earned a bachelor's of sciences in business administration from East Carolina University in 1970, then served as assistant director of student activities while earning a master's of arts in education from the same institution. In 1974, he became associate director and business manager of the Mendenhall Student Center at East Carolina. He went to Rutgers in 1981 as associate dean of students and director of student centers. There he renovated facilities; developed financial, budget and audit systems; established advisory boards to involve students, faculty and staff in the operations of the centers, and created a student development program that included leadership training for student leaders and student organizations.

"I look forward to being an active, contributing member of the Princeton University campus community," said Breitman. "The new Frist Campus Center will provide our diverse students, faculty, and staff with a common ground on which to build a cohesive community of learning. I am confident we can provide a facility, services and programs that will create a positive environment for interaction and understanding."
