Scottish Parliament Member to speak at Princeton on Scottish Independence

Princeton, NJ -- Scottish National Party (SNP) Leader Alex Salmond will speak on "The Scottish Parliament -- Moving Onward to Independence" at Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs on Tuesday, November 16, at 4:30 p.m. in Robertson Hall, Bowl 6.

"Scotland needs independence," Salmond has said. "We need to be a normal nation again, able to work in equal partnership both in these islands and in the wider world. Our ancient country needs the beating heart of a real parliament and the chance to use our resources to solve our problems and contribute to the many needs outwith our shores."

Salmond, who joined the SNP in 1973 and has been a member of its executive committee since 1981, was the vice convener of publicity responsible for the SNP party's political broadcasts before the 1987 general election. Elected leader of the SNP in 1990, Salmond has worked as an economist in the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries for Scotland and as an oil and energy economist for the Royal Bank of Scotland. Before his election to Parliament, he wrote extensively for the daily and specialty press on politics, fishing, oil, and economics, and is currently the SNP's parliamentary spokesperson on the constitution and fisheries.

The lecture is sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson School.
