Conference to Discuss "Latin American Economies in the Long Run"

PRINCETON -- Princeton University will host a conference titled "Latin American Economies in the Long Run" on November 12 and 13. The symposium, organized by the Program in Latin American Studies, is designed to encourage an exchange of views among scholars, policy makers and private sector leaders on the longer-term economic issues confronting Latin America.

In particular, participants will explore the current transformations of Latin American economies and the micro-foundations of growth. The focus will be on the supply-side changes within market factors and changes in the microeconomic policy climate, capital markets and technology. Specific topics will include private savings and inequality, capital markets and banking, technology and manufacturing, and fiscal and regulatory policy.

The format will consist of panel discussions and presentations followed by open discussion sessions. Participants are drawn from academic, multilateral, and governmental institutions and include Arminio Fraga, the current head of Brazil's central bank, as well as several other Latin American financial leaders and economists. Detailed information on the panel topics and participants can be found at http://www.princeton.edu/plasweb/longrun/.

The event is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is suggested, via the on-line registration form at http://www.princeton.edu/plasweb/longrun/onlineregform.html.

The conference is co-sponsored by the Department of Economics, the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, the Center of International Studies, the Council on Regional Studies, and the Research Program in Development Studies.
