Former Polish President Lech Walesa to Speak

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Lech Walesa, former president of Poland, will deliver the inaugural lecture of the Millennium Lecture Series at 3:30 p.m. on October 8 in McCosh 50, Helm Auditorium.
Winner of the 1983 Nobel peace Prize, Walesa spearheaded the Solidarity movement that brought Communist rule to an end in Poland in the 1980s, and in 1990 he became his country's first democratically elected president. Retired from politics, he now heads the Lech Walesa Institute, whose aim is "to advance the ideals of democracy and free market reform throughout Eastern Europe and the rest of the world."
The lecture is free and open to the public. The doors will open at 3:15 p.m. The lecture will be simulcast on Channel 7 on campus and on C-TEC Channel A-10 in Princeton Borough and Princeton Township. It also will be broadcast on the World Wide Web at www.princeton.edu/RealMedia.
Walesa's lecture is the first in a series to be presented as part of the Princeton Millennium Project of the Class of 2000. In addition to talks by Doris Kearns Goodwin and Toni Morrison, the project will include essay contests for Princeton undergraduates
and area high school students, offering cash prizes; an archival project, "A Week in the Life of Princeton, 2000"; and a Millennium Day.
