Ambassador Soderberg to Speak on International Peace Operations

Princeton, N.J. -- Ambassador Nancy E. Soderberg, alternate U.S. representative to the UN Security Council, will speak on "Partnerships for Peace? America and International Peace Operations" at Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs on Tuesday, April 20, at 8:00 p.m. in Robertson Hall, Bowl 2.

Prior to her appointment to the U.S. Mission of the UN, Soderberg served as a deputy special assistant to the president for national security affairs from 1995 until 1997. Her responsibilities included conflict resolution, promotion of democracy abroad, trade policy, arms control, and security policy. As the third ranking official on the National Security Council, she was responsible for day-to-day crisis management, briefing the president, and coordinating U.S. national security policy with executive branch officials, members of Congress, and the press. She is the youngest deputy and highest-ranking woman to ever serve at the National Security Council.

She had previously served as staff director of the National Security Council, deputy director of the Presidential Transition for National Security, and as foreign policy director for the Clinton/Gore campaign in 1992. Before joining the campaign, she was the senior foreign policy adviser to Senator Edward M. Kennedy.

Soderberg, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, has been active in national Democratic politics since the early 1980s. She served as deputy issues director for foreign policy in the Dukakis/Bentsen campaign, and as foreign policy assistant in the Mondale/Ferraro campaign.

Her talk is being sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson School.
