Advisory: Arbor Day Tree Planting Ceremony Planned
This Arbor Day, April 22, the Princeton University Class of 1936 will plant a special seedling in the Washington Memorial Garden on the campus of Princeton University. The tree, a "sweet buckeye" is a direct descendent of one planted by George Washington at Mount Vernon in the 1780's. The planting ceremony will take place at 11:00 a.m.
The planting ceremony is part of the George Washington Bicentennial, a year-long event commemorating the 200th anniversary of Washington's death. The Bicentennial is part of an ongoing effort to promote education about George Washington's life and his contributions to the nation. Other programs include "The George Washington Biography Lesson", a program for fifth graders, which was also supported in part by the Class of 1936.
The Washington Memorial Garden, located behind the John Maclean House, was a gift of the Class of 1936. The garden contains 19 boxwood hedges and a variety of flowers from the original gardens at Mount Vernon.
