Photo Exhibit Chronicles Jewish Life in Germany

PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Ronald O. Perelman Institute for Jewish Studies at Princeton University presents a photography exhibition by Edward Serotta, Jews Germany Memory, A Contemporary Portrait. The show will be held at the Bernstein Gallery in the Woodrow Wilson School through April 19, 1999. The Gallery is open from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily

The exhibition chronicles Jewish life in Germany today and is based on Mr. Serotta's book of the same title. Edward Serotta is one of the leading photographers working in Europe today. His work has appeared in Time Magazine, The Guardian, Die Zeit, The London Independent, DieWoche and The Washington Post.

In this exhibition, the camera focuses on the faces and scenes of Jewish life and memory in Germany in both private and official contexts. Together, these images chronicle the complex relations between the memory of Germany's lost Jews and the realities of renascent communities that have emerged in recent years. By turns, hopeful and heartbreaking, these stunning photographs describe, through the meticulous retelling of people's stories, the stealth of time over history. Reconciliation with the horror of the past has been achieved piecemeal, with differing individual results, and sometimes not at all.

The exhibition is cosponsored by The New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education, The Federal Republic of Germany and The American Jewish Committee.
