Evening to Celebrate Women's History Month

PRINCETON, N.J -- The Princeton University Women's Center presents Singular Women, a theatrical event in celebration of Women's History Month, on Friday evening, March 26, at 8 p.m. in Taplin Auditorium, Fine Hall on the Princeton campus.

Princeton undergraduate Catherine Keyser '01 created the production. "The women who form women's history, for me, are not Betsy Ross or even Hillary Clinton," said Keyser. "When we hear Kate's words from Taming of the Shrew, we are not only recreating a historical vision of womanhood, we are renewing the theatrical strength of the female voice. Whether the voice is submissive or empowered, inspired or despairing, the voice is echoing through an auditorium and by doing so, reminds us how important it is as artists and performers to keep telling women's stories."

According to Susan Overton, director of the Princeton Women's Center, this production is one of the most impressive student-initiated events she has coordinated in 15 years' work with college students. "The 11 women associated with Singular Women are very bright and talented," she said. "Their discipline and commitment to the production in the midst of spring semester academic demands have been inspiring. The directors and actresses demonstrate what is the best of this generation of college women: risk-taking, confidence, great skill and care, and brilliance."

Singular Women consists of 12 monologues from plays that feature women's voices throughout history. Among the plays included in the production are Antigone (Sophocles), The Taming of the Shrew (William Shakespeare), The Rover (Aphra Behn), A Doll's House (Henrik Ibsen), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (Tennessee Williams), WOMBman WARS (Judith Alexa Jackson), And Baby Makes Seven (Paula Vogel), and The Heidi Chronicles (Wendy Wasserstein). A reception honoring the student directors and actresses will follow the production.

The women students contributing their talents to the production include Samara Abrams-Primack '02, Lin-Ann Ching GS, Caitlin Durham '00, Lindsay Garrenton '01, Maura George '01, Erin Gilley '02, Marla Johnson '01, Catherine Keyser '01, Kristine Klaveness '02, Tomoko Minami '01, and Rodlescia Sneed '00.

At 10:30 the same evening, the Women's Center will sponsor an Arch Sing at the 1879 Arch in honor of Women's History Month. The four Princeton women's a capella groups -- Culturally Yours, the TigerLilies, Tigressions, and WildCats -- will raise their voices to celebrate women at Princeton!
