New England Students Receive Scholarships from Alumni

Princeton, N.J. -- Six first-year students at Princeton University have received $1,000 scholarships funded by Princeton alumni from the New England region.

The six are the most recent beneficiaries of the annual scholarship program funded by the Princeton Alumni Association of New England. This year, the alumni association contributed $21,000 to help pay for the education of 21 Princeton students.

The alumni club's generous contribution helps Princeton meet the financial aid need requirements of students from the New England area. Princeton maintains a "need blind" admissions policy, in which the University admits students regardless of financial need.

Once a student is admitted, Princeton assembles a financial aid package that includes funds from University, government and outside sources. The contributions from New England alumni help offset the University's portion of the financial aid package.

The six students from the Class of 2000 receiving PAA of New England Scholarships are:

Sarah Gaines of Falmouth, Mass. A graduate of Falmouth High School, Gaines received the Rotary Club Youth Leadership Award, served as president of her school's National Honor Society and was captain of the varsity cross-country team.

Matthew Gill of Westwood, Mass. A graduate of Westwood High School, Gill received the Williams College Book Award and the Bausch & Lomb Science Award. He was a member of the National Honor Society and the Magna Cum Laude Society and was captain of the varsity ski and basketball teams.

Helena Joly of Wakefield, Mass. A graduate of Wakefield Memorial High School, Joly won the Harvard Book Award and the Rensselaer Medal of Math and Science. She was a president of the National Honor Society, a member of the symphony orchestra and a member of Amnesty International.

Rachel Lisker of Newton, Mass. Lisker graduated from Newton North High School. She won the Cornell University Book Award, served as captain of the mock trial team and was a choir member.

John Tedeman of Boston, Mass. A graduate of Roxbury Latin School, Tedeman was a National Latin Exam Silver Medalist and a member of the varsity hockey and basketball teams.

Benjamin Waterhouse of Bedford, Mass. A graduate of Bedford High School, Waterhouse was an Eagle Scout, a member of the marching band, the drama club, the Madrigal singers, the National Honor Society and the soccer team.

Tuition, fees and expenses at Princeton University are $30,690 for the 1996-97 academic year. This year, 44 percent of Princeton's 4,600 undergraduates receive financial aid.
