UNICEF Director Carol Bellamy to Speak at Princeton

Princeton, N.J.--Carol Bellamy, executive director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), will speak on "What Rights for Children in a Turbulent World?" at Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs on Wednesday, October 16, at 8:00 p.m. in Dodds Auditorium, Robertson Hall.

Bellamy assumed office as the fourth executive director of UNICEF, with the rank of under-secretary general, in May of 1995. One of her first priorities has been the restructuring of the organization to ensure that its work for children continues in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible. The changes are designed to enhance UNICEF's ability to deliver the Year 2000 Goals for Children, targets set by the 1990 World Summit for Children in all aspects of the care of children throughout the world, including the provision of health care and education, and protection from neglect and abuse.

Bellamy had previously been head of the Peace Corps, appointed by President Clinton in 1993. A former volunteer for the Peace Corps, she was the first volunteer to return to head the agency. Immediately before joining the Corps, she was the managing director in the Public Finance Department at Bear Stearns & Co.

Her career includes significant public sector service--she served in the New York State Senate from 1973 until 1977, and in 1978 became the first woman president of the New York City Council, a position she held until 1985.

Bellamy's talk is being sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson School.
