Paula-Rose Stark of Detroit Named Winner of Princeton's Sachs Scholarship

PRINCETON, NJ. -- Paula-Rose Stark, a senior majoring in classics at Princeton, has been named winner of the University's Daniel M. Sachs Class of 1960 Graduating Senior Fellowship.

Stark, of Detroit, plans to study philosophy, politics and economics at Worcester College, Oxford, for two years.

The Sachs Scholarship has been awarded since 1970 in memory of Daniel Sachs, who starred in football and lacrosse as a Princeton undergraduate before going on to Worcester College as a Rhodes Scholar and, after that, to Harvard law School. Sachs died of cancer at the age of 28. When classmates and friends established the scholarship in his honor, they stipulated that it be given annually to the senior who best exemplifies Sachs' character, intelligence and commitment, and whose scholarship is most likely to benefit the public. The scholarship provides tuition and support for two years of graduate study.

For her senior thesis, Stark is exploring the handling of extortion within the criminal justice system during the late Roman republic, studying court cases pleaded by Cicero. Her research concerns the ways in which the disposition of such cases reflects particular political ends, rather than a view toward legal precedent.

Stark's extracurricular involvements often feature the public interest. She spent the past two summers as an aide to Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer and City Council Member Sheila M. Cockrel, developing and helping to implement a proposal for a federally funded economic empowerment zone within the city. She serves on the national board of directors of the U.S. Committee for UNICEF, working on projects to facilitate student participation in the organization's programming.

Stark hails from a family of journalists: Both her parents, Susan and Allan Stark, work on the editorial staff of the Detroit News. Paula-Rose herself is a writer, producing two columns each month for the News containing capsule reviews of books that may be of interest to young audiences. She is also a photographer who free-lances occasionally for the News while maintaining regular ties to Princeton's student newspaper, the Daily Princetonian.

A three-year veteran of Princeton's women's varsity ice hockey team, Stark also serves on the University's Discipline Committee, the faculty-student group responsible for the administration of the rules and regulations governing undergraduate conduct.

Stark is a graduate of the University Liggett School in Grosse Pointe, Mich.
