Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense
to Speak on ''Humanitarian Intervention''
at Princeton University

Princeton, N.J.--Patricia Irvin, deputy assistant secretary
of defense for humanitarian and refugee affairs, will speak
on ``Humanitarian Intervention'' at Princeton University's
Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs on
Thursday, Nov. 16, at 4:30 p.m. in Bowl 1, Robertson Hall.

Irvin, a member of Princeton's Class of 1976, was appointed
to her current position by President Clinton in 1993. Her
office is responsible for policy issues relating to the
Defense Department's involvement in disaster relief and
humanitarian assistance initiatives throughout the world, as
well as issues related to the law of war, refugees, and
migration.

Before joining the Clinton administration, Irvin was a
partner in the New York City corporate law firm of Milbank,
Tweed, Hadley and McCloy. Her practice involved work in
mergers and acquisitions and leveraged buyouts in both
domestic and international transactions.

Irvin has served as a trustee of the Democratic National
Committee and as a member of the boards of directors of the
Legal Aid Society and the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational
Fund. She is the founder of the Practicing Attorneys for Law
Students (PALS) Program, a non-profit corporation that
matches law students of color with attorney-mentors, sponsors
workshops in various areas of law, and provides counseling
services to students. Irvin is also a member of the Council
on Foreign Relations, the American Law Institute, the
American Bar Association, and the National Bar Association.

Her talk is being sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson School and
Princeton's Army Officer Education Program.
