Director of the Institute for Women's Policy
Research to Speak at Princeton

Princeton, N.J.--Heidi Hartman, director of the Washington-based
Institute for Women's Policy Research (IWPR) and a 1994 recipient
of the MacArthur fellowship award, commonly referred to as the
``genius grant,'' will speak on ``Welfare Reform and Other Women's
Economic Issues on the National Agenda'' at Princeton University's
Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs on
Monday, Oct. 2, at 4:30 p.m. in Dodds Auditorium, Robertson Hall.

IWPR is a scientific research organization that focuses on policy
issues of importance to women. As its director, Hartman has co-
authored several reports, including _Who Needs a Family Wage?: The
Implications of Low-Wage Work for Family Well-Being; Combining
Work and Welfare: An Alternative Anti-Poverty Strategy;_ and
Economic Perspectives on Affirmative Action.

Before joining IWPR, Hartman was director of the women's studies
program at Rutgers University, an American Statistical Association
fellow at the Census Bureau, and a staff member of the National
Research Council/National Academy of Sciences. She has testified
before Congress and participated in briefings on numerous issues,
including comparable worth, family and medical leave, child care,
welfare reform, and health care. She lectures widely on public
policy, feminist theory, and the political economy of gender.

Her talk is being sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson School.
