African-American Activist
to Speak at Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Mandy Carter, founder and director of the
National Black Gay and Lesbian Forum's _National Call to Resist
Campaign_, will visit Princeton University March 23 and 24. Carter
will give a formal speech the first day and speak at a brown-bag
lunch discussion the following day.

Carter, who has worked for progressive change in communities and
churches for more than 25 years, was an anti-war activist with the
War Resisters League and later initiated a political campaign to
defeat U.S. Senator Jesse Helms of North Carolina. As director of
the _National Call to Resist Campaign_, she is leading an effort
in African-American churches and communities to counter the anti-
gay agenda of the religious right.

Her major presentation, "Race, Sex, Gender, Religion: Bridging
Communities, Effecting Change," will take place on Thursday, March
23, at 4:30 p.m. at Betts Auditorium. It will focus on the
commonalities of oppression and the movement toward social action.

The following day, she will speak at a brown-bag lunch discussion
on "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Legislation and the New Congress:
What's Happening on the Hill?" at 106 Aaron Burr Hall. Drinks and
dessert will be provided.

Both events are free and open to the public.

Carter's visit is sponsored by the Women's Center, the Office of
Religious Life, the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Alliance, the Third World
Center, and the Office of the Dean of Student Life. For more
information, contact the Princeton University Women's Center at
