Marian Wright Edelman Highlights
Princeton's Martin Luther King Day Program

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Marian Wright Edelman, president of the
Children's Defense Fund, will speak at Princeton University
Monday, January 16, highlighting the university's celebration of
Martin Luther King Day. The program, to be held at 1:30 p.m. in
Richardson Auditorium, is free and open to the public.

An honorary degree recipient at Princeton's 1993 Commencement,
Edelman heads the Children's Defense Fund's efforts to advocate
for disadvantaged Americans in the areas of adolescent pregnancy
prevention, child health and education, child care, youth
employment, mental health and family support systems. According to
her citation at the 1993 Commencement, "She measures us by our
commitment to our children, knowing that their success secures the
foundation of the new millennium."

Edelman, a 1960 Spelman College graduate, received the LL.B. from
Yale Law School in 1963.

Princeton's King Day program also includes the Trenton Children's
Chorus, which will perform along with members of the youth and
children's choirs of Nassau Presbyterian Church.

In addition, the university will announce the winners of a King
Day poster contest (for New Jersey elementary school children) and
essay contest (for middle school and high school students). The
winning posters will be on display during the program.
