McKay, general manager of plant and services in the facilities department for the past 10 years, has been a Princeton staff member since 1977. He will play a key role in overseeing all aspects of the University's physical plant, and in the planning, design and construction of capital projects. "In his more than 25 years at Princeton, Mike McKay has earned the confidence and respect of his colleagues in facilities, members of the senior administration, other members of the faculty and staff, local officials and the trustees," said President Shirley M. Tilghman. "We are delighted to be able to promote him to the vice presidency, to welcome him to the cabinet and to look to him for leadership in carrying out the many important responsibilities that are assigned to the offices that comprise the facilities department." "Mike is uniquely qualified to lead Princeton's facilities department. Over the years, he has managed large parts of our diversified department while, more recently, leading the critical effort to redefine our approach to capital project development and management," said Charles Kalmbach, senior vice president for administration, to whom McKay will report. "Mike’s ability to contribute to numerous cross-departmental teams chartered to address University-wide opportunities has been extremely helpful in advancing the goals of our administration. He will be a valued member of the Senior Administrative Planning Group." McKay joined the Princeton staff as assistant director of engineering in the facilities department. He was promoted to director of engineering in 1980. As general manager of plant and services since 1993, he has been responsible for several departments within facilities: engineering, maintenance, housing, dining services, building services, visitors/conference services, Prospect House and Palmer House. With his new position, he will add administrative services, physical planning, real estate and customer service/quality improvement to his areas of responsibility. "This is an incredibly exciting time for facilities in many respects," McKay said. "We are facing the challenges of implementing the largest capital construction program in the institution's history at the same time that we are working to improve levels of customer service in other areas. I feel fortunate to have this opportunity to work on a broader range of issues and even more fortunate to be able to continue working with an incredibly dedicated and energetic staff in facilities." A registered professional engineer in New Jersey and Virginia and a member of the Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers, McKay has served as president of the International District Energy Association and on the boards of the New Jersey Independent Energy Producers and the Coalition for Competitive Energy. He also was a member of a Congressional Blue Ribbon Panel that evaluated energy options for the U.S. Capitol. McKay earned a bachelor of science in engineering degree from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1969 and a master's degree in management from Boston University in 1974. Prior to coming to Princeton, he worked as a senior physicist with Westinghouse and served as an officer in the Army Corps of Engineers. He has been a member of the board of trustees for the Old Barracks Museum in Trenton. McKay succeeds Kathleen Mulligan, whose resignation, effective June 30, was announced in February. |
