Princeton University names new media relations manager

PRINCETON, N.J -- Patricia (Patty) Allen, a communications professional with 16 years of experience in journalism and public relations, has been appointed Princeton University’s media relations manager, effective April 14.

Working in the Office of Communications, she will be responsible for serving as a spokesperson and for coordinating external coverage of the University. She will succeed Marilyn Marks, who is now editor of Princeton Alumni Weekly.

"My heart belongs to the academy, and I am honored to accept this position," Allen said. "I am so impressed with the professionalism and commitment to excellence I have observed in the Office of Communications and at the University. I have had profoundly meaningful experiences in promoting the research of faculty members, their work in the community and their efforts in shaping public policy in education, health and children’s rights. Now, I look forward to new adventures as a member of the Princeton team."

Since 1998, Allen has been a press officer at New York University. She has served as media relations director for the Steinhardt School of Education and managed universitywide media events, including visits from former President Bill Clinton, British Prime Minister Tony Blair and United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

From 1994 to 1997, Allen worked as a media relations manager for AT&T’s international business services and WorldNet Internet service in Bridgewater, N.J., and for AT&T consumer services in Basking Ridge, N.J. She also was a media relations manager for the NCR Corp. in Dayton, Ohio, from 1992 to 1994.

Previously, Allen was a newspaper reporter for five years, working for The Southbridge (Mass.) News, the Cape Cod Times in Hyannis, Mass., and The Dayton (Ohio) Daily News. She earned a bachelor’s degree, cum laude, in journalism from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University in 1987.

"Patty will bring a wonderful blend of skills, developed in the academic, corporate and media sectors, plus a high level of energy and professionalism," said Lauren Robinson-Brown, director of communications, to whom Allen will report.

"She was highly recommended by faculty members, colleagues and journalists alike. Patty is known for her expertise in handling challenging situations and for her diplomacy," she continued. "Her relationships with major media outlets also will help the University tell important stories about the quality of our faculty, the diversity of our student body, our international reach and the leadership of President Shirley M. Tilghman."
