News from PRINCETON UNIVERSITY For immediate release: July 2, 2002 Contact: Contact: Marilyn Marks, 609-258-3601 or mmarks@princeton.edu Daniel Silverman to serve as chief medical officer and head of University Health ServicesPRINCETON, N.J. -- Dr. Daniel Silverman, a physician with experience in health systems management, academic administration and medical education, has been selected to serve as chief medical officer and to lead University Health Services at Princeton. His appointment as chief medical officer of the University and executive director of University Health Services is effective Aug. 15. He will succeed Dr. Pamela Bowen, who earlier this year announced her plans to step down as director of University Health Services after 11 years of service to Princeton.
"I am delighted that Dr. Danny Silverman will join the Princeton community as chief medical officer for the University and executive director of Princeton University Health Services," said Janet Dickerson, Princeton's vice president for campus life, to whom Silverman will report. "He is a visionary leader in development of new healthcare technologies and in collaborative healthcare programs and is especially well prepared to enhance our knowledge and understanding of the complex medical and psychiatric challenges facing undergraduate and graduate students. "Dr. Silverman has an established reputation as a clinician, a scholar and a physician executive," she continued. "With these skills, I believe he will become an adviser and advocate for the life-long health of our whole community." Dickerson noted that the title of chief medical officer was added to the position "better to reflect the scope of the director's responsibilities as well as the value the University places on the health of this community." "I believe that in establishing a new position which combines the roles of chief medical officer for the University and executive director of University Health Services," Silverman said, "the University's leadership is expressing its strong desire to create a campuswide environment that will facilitate student health, wellness and personal fulfillment as a fundamental part of the academic mission. I feel privileged and excited to have been asked to join Princeton's students, faculty and administration in fulfilling that vision." From 1998 to 2000, Silverman served as vice president for clinical effectiveness and co-director of the Center for Healthcare Quality and Effectiveness at BJC Healthcare in St. Louis, the healthcare system partner of Washington University's School of Medicine. He was responsible for the design, development and implementation of population-based healthcare programs across the system's hospitals, health plans and medical practices. He was a senior clinical consultant from 1995 to 1997 with CSC/APM Inc. of New York, the nation's largest dedicated health care management consulting group. He worked with physician leaders, allied health professionals and administrators in the redesign and improvement of clinical delivery systems in academic medical centers and in teaching and community hospitals in the United States and Canada. Silverman regularly participates in medical school, physician executive training and health service management courses, lecturing on concepts of clinical effectiveness, patient safety and quality improvement in healthcare systems. His background also includes extensive experience as a clinical program director and medical educator at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. While serving as the associate chief of psychiatry from 1988 to 1996 and as director of ambulatory psychiatric services at Beth Israel, he worked closely with several university health service programs, including those at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard, Simmons College and Emerson College. He facilitated access to mental health services and created student-focused programs for eating disorders, rape crisis intervention and depression. He also served as a clinical adviser to the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs at Harvard Medical School throughout his tenure at Beth Israel Hospital, and provided consultation, counseling and psychotherapy to many medical students, residents, clinical fellows and faculty. A cum laude graduate of the University of Michigan, Silverman earned his medical degree from the Northwestern University School of Medicine. He is a graduate of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and also received a master of public administration degree from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, specializing in strategic management of healthcare organizations. At Princeton, Silverman's specific responsibilities will encompass out-patient services, including urgent care, travel and immunization services, and reproductive health services; a 17-bed in-patient unit; laboratory and X-ray services; a counseling center, which offers psychological services, alcohol and drug counseling and education, and a sexual harassment/assault counseling and education program; athletic medicine, including athletic training and physical therapy services; health promotion, outreach and education; and the employee health department. Silverman
is currently director of Evidence-Based Medicine Solutions and associate
professor of clinical psychiatry at the Washington University School
of Medicine in St. Louis. In addition to serving as a lecturer, clinical
teacher and supervisor, he has worked with Dr. William Peck, dean of
the School of Medicine, to create EBM Solutions, a consortium involving
medical schools at Washington, Duke, Emory, Vanderbilt, Oregon Health
Sciences and Mount Sinai/New York universities. Its goal is to provide
evidence-based clinical guidelines and interactive treatment tools to
patients, physicians, employers, healthcare systems and managed care
organizations.
