Berry Brazelton Jr. will participate in a Princeton University panel discussion Saturday, Feb. 23 on "Talking with Children in a Post-Sept. 11 World." The discussion is part of Alumni Day events and so is not open to the general public, although journalists are welcomed. The discussion will be moderated by noted psychiatrist Marsha Levy Warren, a member of Princeton's class of 1973 and former Princeton trustee. Other participants are Janet Smith Dickerson, vice president for campus life; and Frederick H. Borsch, bishop for the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles and a member of the class of 1957. The discussion begins at 4:15 p.m. in 101 McCormick Hall. Brazelton, a member of Princeton's class of 1940, is one of the world's best-known pediatricians. He has written 28 books on pediatrics and child development, including the classic "Infants and Mothers," which has been printed in 18 languages and has sold more than a million copies. Over the years, Brazelton's work has focused on individual differences among infants, attachment between parents and infants and preventative pediatric healthcare. He has written about cross-cultural differences in parenting and child behavior, on the importance of early intervention for at-risk infants and their families, and on the opportunities that newborns present to strengthen their families. Brazelton is clinical professor emeritus of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and professor of psychiatry and human development at Brown University. In 1973, Brazelton and colleagues developed the Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale, an evaluation tool used to assess physical and neurological responses in infants. It continues to be used in research and clinical settings around the world.
