The Cotsen Players perform "Sara Crewe" February 23 and 24

PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Cotsen Children's Library tranforms into Victorian London this weekend when the Cotsen Players present "Sara Crewe, or What Happened at Miss Minchin's," a play by Princeton University playwright Robert N. Sandberg, based on the classic children's story of A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Princeton junior Adena Spingarn is directing this undergraduate production.

The library's Giant Book has been papered over to become the set of a London boarding school for girls run by headmistress Miss Minchin, played by Princeton University sophomore Sarah Combs. A wealthy young boarder named Sara Crewe (Felice Kuan '04) is reluctantly delivered into Miss Minchin's care by her father, Captain Ralph Crewe (John Portlock '01). There, his imaginative and peculiar daughter receives a mixed welcome from her classmates (played by Morgan Voeltz '03, Adena Spingarn '03, Erin Sullivan '03, and Liz Berg '04). When Crewe dies and Sara's fortune has been lost, Miss Minchin turns her "most promising pupil" into a servant under the supervision of the beleaguered Cook (Michelle Sharpe '04), and banishes her to a rat-infested attic. An Indian laskar (Philip Isles '03), the manservant of Crewe's old friend Carrisford (Trevor Portlock '04), comes to Sara's rescue, and turns fantasy into reality in this Victorian fairy tale drama.

The Cotsen Players will give two performances that are free and open to the public on Sunday at 1:00 and 4:00. They will also perform for alumni and university families on Saturday at 10:00 and 1:30. Following the Saturday afternoon performance, playwright Robert N. Sandberg, a graduate of Princeton University and a Lecturer in the university's Department of English and Program in Theater and Dance, will lead an audience discussion.

Seating is limited for all performances. For information and reservations, call the Cotsen Children's Library at 609-258-1148. The Cotsen Children's Library is located in Firestone Library, at the corner of Nassau Street and Washington Road on the Princeton University Campus.
