From 1973 to 1987, Billington was director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. He is the author of several books about Russia, including "Mikhailovsky and Russia Populism," "Fire in the Minds of Men," and "The Face of Russia." In May, 1999, he created the Open World Russia Leadership Program, a Congressional initiative that brought 3,650 emerging Russian political leaders to the United States for exposure to free-market democracy at the local level.

Billington has received 28 honorary degrees from U.S. universities, as well as the Woodrow Wilson Award from Princeton University and the UCLA Medal. He is a member of the Princeton class of 1950.

His lecture is sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and the Center for the Study of Religion. It is free and open to the public.
