Friends of Library host talk on early European printing

Princeton, N.J. --Paul Needham and Blaise Agüera y Arcas will present their recent research on early European printing on Thursday, March 15 at 5 p.m. in McCormick 101.

In their lecture, "How Were the Earliest European Printing Types Made?" Needham and Agüera y Arcas will discuss their finding that contrary to popular belief, Johann Gutenberg did not invent moveable type, and will speak about the implications of their work. Needman is librarian of the Scheide Library, a private collection housed in Firestone Library. Agüera y Arcas is a library research associate.

Agüera y Arcas devised a method to analyze printed texts with a computer, which the researchers used to examine several of Gutenberg's documents. The pair came to their conclusion about Gutenberg after finding inconsistencies in the individual letters.

The talk is sponsored by the Friends of the Princeton University Library, and is free and open to the public. A reception in the Main Exhibition Gallery at Firestone Library will follow.
